Growing confidence

Things are going very well for First Engineering chief executive Tony Smith. The company he formed from a management buyout of British Rail's Scottish Infrastructure Maintenance Company has seen its turnover increase from £95M in 1994 to £120M last year. In the same time it has been able to expand its business into England, opening offices in London, Birmingham, Manchester and York.
