Your commentary on the government's failure, yet again, to provide performance to match rhetoric (NCE 19 July) requires a matching response from us.

It was mentioned that we are one year into a 10 year plan to spend £180bn on public transport. But in the first year we have only spent at half the required rate. And this is a government whose proudest achievement is the elimination of boom and bust.

Our entire industry - client, consultant and contractor - can only organise efficient spending in a settled climate, not in one of boom and bust.

Perhaps NCE could provide us with a weekly graph showing how much is actually spent against how much was promised.

NCE is read by influential Members of Parliament, and also the public via the media.

We owe it to everyone to publish how performance matches plans. Only then can our technical performance be matched by financial performance. Moreover, we would be providing a lead to complementary areas of economic life, education and health.
