Graduates let down by Institutions, report says

Engineering institutions have failed to equip graduates with the broad skills they need to work on multi-disciplinary projects, says the NeverWaste a Good Crisis review.

“To attract students, higher education providers have to demonstrate that their course content is accredited by the professional institutions, which tend to exist in parallel silos.

“While most universities have made efforts to introduce crossdisciplinary learning and joint project work, this falls short of enabling students to understand how the industry really works at a business and strategic level,” says the report. “Greater integration of professional accreditation routes would be a major step towards helping new entrants gain a broader and more holistic industry perspective from the start of their careers.”

Review team chairman Andrew Wolstenholme bemoaned the recent failure of merger talks between the ICE and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). “We were pleased that the institutions were starting to talk about a super institution and we were disappointed that it didn’t go anywhere,” he said.
