Government approves A3 Hindhead tunnel scheme

Senior government ministers Doug Alexander, Ruth Kelly, and David Milliband, yesterday said that they were 'minded to accept' a public inquiry inspector's recommendation in favour of construction of the A3 Hindhead tunnel in Surrey.
A final decision will be taken following assessment of responses to a consultation exercise to take into account that costs have increased to £371M since the close of the inquiry. Details of this consultation are set out in the decision letter, a copy of which is available on the Department of Transport's website, together with the Inspector's report - http://www.dft.gov.uk. The published scheme will divert 6.7km of the existing A3 Portsmouth Road, with a 1.9km twin bored tunnel section that passes under the Devil's Punch Bowl.Related links:Today's top stories
