GORGEOUS SITE: Second of two giant tower cranes for the Three Gorges dam project in China is being tested by manufacturer Potain at its test ground in France. Components for the first unit are already arriving at the firm's Shanghai factory for completion, ready to begin work on site in October. The huge MD2200 Topbelt 30s are fitted with special conveyors to place the 4M.m3 of concrete required each year for the 175m high mass concrete main dam and 185m high spillway dividers. Construction of the first 1500m long phase of this has just begun following diversion of the Yangtse River last October. The specially redesigned cranes have huge 5m by 5m tower sections.
