ONE OF Hong Kong's biggest construction barons has launched plans for 15km of highway, bridge and immersed tube tunnel to link the region's north west New Territories and Chek Lap Kok airport.
Sir Gordon Wu's HK-9bn (US-1.1bn) scheme has been developed as an alternative to Hong Kong highways department's plans to build the US-2.9bn, 13km Route 10 highway through the New Territories.
Widespread opposition to the Route 10 proposals has led to local lawmakers rejecting government pleas for US-22.5M to fund detailed design work for the highway and associated road and bridge links to mainland China.
Meanwhile, Wu is promoting an alternative highway that would include a 4km eastern bypass of Tuen Mun new town in the north west territories and a bridge and tunnel link to Chek Lap Kok airport island.
This would involve constructing a 1.3km immersed tube road tunnel 30m under the main shipping channel.
The tunnel portals will be formed at two artificial islands, each about 500m to 600m long, providing the interface between the tunnel and two causeway type bridge structures.
The one to the north will be about 3km and connect with the Tuen Mun eastern bypass, while the second, nearly 3km long, will reach Chek Lap Kok.
The Hong Kong government is opposed to the plans, believing them to be too risky.
