The new ideas like shared spaces and home zones are being implemented in different cities without deep thinking. All these trends are bound to overlook the safety of pedestrians. According to the reports every year more than 40,000 pedestrians are injured or killed and 73% of road accidents occur in built up areas of the UK. Every year the cost of accidents runs into billions of pounds.
Traffic calming measures are valuable life savers and weapons in the war against speed and negligent drivers. They are also called sleeping policemen. There is a wide range of traffic calming measures and they can be adopted according to the local environments.
For example speed cushions and horizontal calming measures can be used on bus routes. Similarly segregated pedestrian routes are important to ensure safe conditions. Life of individuals is more precious than anything else and it should not be compromised at all cost.
