Germany calls for new rules

German transport minister Franz Muntefering will demand new regulations for road tunnel safety at a European Union summit later this month.

A transport ministry spokesman said that although Germany had no single- bore trunk road tunnels itself, Muntefering considers the issue to be of Europe-wide importance.

'With two serious accidents in a short period of time we are very conscious that we have to do something quickly and we want to discuss this with all our European colleagues,' he said.

Muntefering is likely to suggest new rules on what can be carried through road tunnels and will press for service tunnels on all single bore structures. The summit will take place on 17 and 18 June in Luxembourg.
