By 2004 it is intended that prime contracting will be fully embedded. Defence Estates has been developing expertise in working with the new procurement method through demonstration projects at Aldershot with prime contractor Amec, and at Wattisham with Laing. Defence and project management contractor DML is prime contractor for the seismic upgrade of nuclear submarine berthing at Devonport.
Defence Estates is now in the process of selecting prime contractors for four pilot projects: a nuclear qualified submarine jetty at Faslane, office facilities and accommodation at Andover, single ranks accommodation at Wimbish, and medical facilities at Tidworth. A further 11 projects with an aggregate value of £400M are in the pipeline. In addition to capital works the portfolio will include major upgrades, and repair and maintenance.
