Atkins wins work on floating wind power scheme

Atkins has won a key role on an ambitious project to create multi-turbine floating wind power platforms in British waters.

The firm was named as engineering partner by Swedish company Hexicon for the Dounreay Tri Project off the north coast of Scotland.

NCE reported in 2014 that Hexicon planned to use SEK11.4M (£1M) it raised through a rights issue to demonstrate its innovative platforms.

Atkins is now analysing a two-turbine 8-12MW structure ready for front end engineering design and physical model testing later this year.

Atkins project manager Katherine Ward said: “We’re really pushing the boundaries of what can be done to support Hexicon in maximising energy yield through clever design.

”The team has a great deal of experience in innovative, transformational work both in the renewables and oil and gas sectors and on this project we are going one step further in making such an exciting concept a reality.”

Hexicon project director Marcus Thor added: “Our aim is for this project to show how a multi-turbine concept can help bring down the cost of offshore wind, enabling this form of renewable energy to be even more financially viable.”

Although the first floating turbine came into operation near Norway in 2009, Hexicon believes putting more than one on each platform can bring down costs and improve ease of maintenance.
