The Institution's decision to suspend 50-year membership will no doubt come as a blowto those members approaching their ICE half century.
However, Professor Fleming's direction that older members should go to the Benevolent Fund if 'really stuck', is a little misleading.
The fund exists to help all grades of members and their dependants when theyare in financial need.
It is not within the Benevolent Fund's remit, however, to automatically pay ICE subscriptions for those whohave been members for more than 50 years.
Last week's rail crash will have brought home to manyhow suddenly and tragically financial need can arise.
I ask anyone who knows of any member or their family suffering as a result of it - or any other disaster - to contact the fund to enable it to offer assistance.
You can phone the fund on (01444) 417979 or email email@example.com.
