Ms Venables and Mr LloydRoach have every reason to be concerned about readers being misled about the removal of the need for site experience in attaining chartered status (NCE 10 November). But it is the terminology that they use and a specific omission from the core objectives that confuse.

Gaining knowledge from experience rather than fi lling in time is the absolute requirement to produce a rounded design engineer. In other cultures, where site experience is not required of designers, poor and ineffective detailing on drawings and impractical constructability is not uncommon.

The only reference I can fi nd in the core objectives to buildability and to effective detailing is in E5 'transfer of information to practical effect'. That seems a rather elaborate way of expressing what, I believe, is among the core skills of a good designer.

More to the point, no reference is made to this or any other core objective being obtained from site experience.

This appears to support the view point of the academics.

The candidate cannot gain experience of putting a design into reality from a book and cannot prove this by ticking boxes. However, he can demonstrate it under verbal or written examination.

The standard that examiners used to look for was 'has the candidate learned from his experience and will he continue to learn-' Has this changed?
