1 The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) has awarded its Gold Medal for 2008 to Arup Fellow Mike Glover, for his outstanding contribution to the design and construction of major multi-disciplinary projects around the world.
2 The Gold Medal is IStructE's highest individual award and is made for exceptional contributions to the advancement of structural engineering. Previous winners include Ove Arup (1973) and Michel Virlogeux (1996).
3 Glover, one of Arup's most versatile and experienced engineers, joined in 1969. He started in research and development and expanded into design leadership of multidisciplinary projects ranging from tall buildings to energy and infrastructure.
4 The last ten years of his work have focused on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. The 109km long high speed rail link includes 150 bridges, many miles of tunnels, the major rejuvenation of London's St Pancras Station and the regeneration of large urban brownfield areas in Kings Cross, Stratford and North Kent. His involvement with this project saw him awarded The Royal Academy of Engineering's Sir Frank Whittle Medal.
