Forum move to improve links with construction

ICE news

ICE PRESIDENT Doug Oakervee has moved to increase the relevance of the Institution to construction by setting up a forum with the chief executives of 12 leading firms.

Six consultants and six contractors are represented on the forum, which will meet every eight weeks to discuss ways the ICE and industry can work in partnership.

'They will tell us what they expect of us and we can find out what to expect from them, ' Oakervee told Council last month.

A second forum made up of academics will run in parallel.

This will be led by professor Stephen Brown, head of civil engineering at Nottingham and an ICE Council member.

The two forums will then be brought together in mid-2004 to improve ways in which the construction industry, academia and the institutions work together.

Oakervee has also set up a panel of past presidents to offer advice as the forums develop.

'Some of the ideas we come up with will be radical and some presidents may have been here before and failed, ' he said.
