lThe £20M dam project on the Upper Macal River in Belize was approved this week by the UK's Privy Council.

Environmentalists fear that the dam will threaten rare species by destroying their habitats.

Backers of the 50m high dam say it will lessen the island's reliance on Mexico for energy.

The Privy Council is the highest court of appeal for Belize.

lAn inquest was launched this week into how a small fire claimed the lives of 14 elderly residents at the Rosepark Care Home, Uddington, near Glasgow last weekend. It is thought smoke rapidly spread from the fire in a ground floor store room because fire doors were not closed. Fumes from small domestic fires typically contain high quantities of carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide, which can prove fatal in a matter of minutes or even seconds, fire experts said.
