Floating floors

Letters

After the devastation from the floods in York last year, it became clear that any building at risk from flooding could be modified.

Our alternative was to incorporate ground floors that floated, thereby removing floors and household belongings from the floodwaters. This idea was developed to include household utilities that also retreat above the flood.

Also, because floodwaters leave unpleasant debris, the idea was improved so that the building can be pre-flooded with clean water. The same lifting effect is achieved but using water that will wash out after the flood carrying out any unwanted debris with it.

The concept has been filed for a patent.
