First drive complete on London Power Tunnels

Costain has announced that one of its tunnel boring machines (TBMs) working on the London Power Tunnels has completed the first part of its 19km drive.

The £220M project will see 32km of new tunnels to carry high voltage electricity cables between Hackney and Willesden (via St John’s Wood) and Kensal Green and Wimbledon.

The 3m diameter Lovat dual mode TBM – named Evelyn – has completed the drive from Willesden Substation to a pre-prepared shaft below National Grid’s Channel Gate Road. The machine will soon be relaunched to complete its drive. The remaining 13km of tunnels are being bored by a 4m diameter earth pressure balance Herrenknecht TBM – called Cleopatra – which has completed 1km of the drive from Haringey.

Tunnelling work is expected to be completed in 2014.
