Fine unpaid

Austrian tunnelling consultant Geoconsult has so far failed to pay any of the £0.5M fine imposed last year for its part in the 1994 Heathrow Express tunnel collapse. The consultant has been summoned to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates Court on 18 February to explain. Although Geoconsult has not yet said it will not pay the fine, the case underlines the difficulties of collecting court fines from foreign companies, particularly if they have no assets in Britain.
