News stand - What the papers say

French drivers of outsize sports utility vehicles and other 'gas guzzlers' could pay up to £2,620 in tax as part of a new environment bill announced last week. The bill, intended to cut air, water and soil pollution over the next five years, will offer tax credits or cash up to £470 to encourage motorists to buy smaller cars. The plan follows an attempt by Paris town hall to ban 4x4s from the city centre last month.
