Fifteen thousand scrap tyres

ICE news

Fifteen thousand scrap tyres are being used to reinforce landslip-prone hillsides around Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, at a third of the cost of conventional concrete retaining walls. A report on a 60m long, 4m high trial wall to determine the best construction method appears in the latest issue (vol 155, no 4) of the ICE/BGA Geotechnical Engineering journal.

Summaries of all papers can be read at www. geotechnicaljournal. com.
