FIDIC 2009 conference: Special preview

13-16 September 2009
Global challenges, sustainable solutions
QEII Conference Centre, Westminster

FIDIC 2009 will bring together infrastructure professionals from across the globe representing clients, industry, government organisations, funding agencies, consultants, and engineers. Together they will discuss and debate how the consulting engineering industry can take the lead in planning and delivering sustainable solutions to the global challenges facing the world’s infrastructure.

Financial crisis and the on-going deep economic downturn provides the backdrop to the 2009 FIDIC Conference which for this year will be hosted in London, The event provides a unique opportunity for the consulting engineering community to address and find solutions to the many vitally important global issues that need to be tackled urgently.

A unique opportunity

Top of this list will be the need to mitigate and adapt to climate change, the ever-increasing demand for energy, the need for investment in infrastructure in emerging economies, and the issue of mass urbanisation.

To tackle the challenges effectively, the world needs the leadership, experience and creativity of the engineering community. If we can position ourselves to take the lead, mobilise our resources and apply our expertise and knowledge we will be able to deliver sustainable solutions and help lead society away from recession.

“The world needs the leadership, experience and creativity of the engineering community.”

Yet there is a severe shortfall in the skills needed to plan, design and build the necessary infrastructure. The problem may well become a crisis if we do not prepare ourselves for the challenges that lie ahead.

The conference builds on the work of the recent past. FIDIC 2007 in Singapore explored the key factors for successful relationships between partners.

Last year FIDIC 2008 in Quebec challenged consulting engineers to build a stronger industry that can better serve society.

FIDIC 2009 in London explores the role of engineers in the delivery of sustainable solutions to our global challenges. The aim will be to identify and plan the actions needed to position the consulting engineering industry as a leader in providing viable and effective solutions.
