SPANISH CONTRACTOR Ferrovial is considering plans to take over UK airport operator BAA. The group has a history of buying local contracting expertise to support its international infrastructure concessions businesses.
Last year it bought Texas based contractor Webber to support toll road construction work won by its Cintra infrastructure concessions subsidiary.
Ferrovial already has a substantial presence in the UK maintenance and engineering design markets through its acquisition of Amey in 2003.
Amey in turn bought consultant Owen Williams last month to strengthen its presence in highways maintenance and rail.
Ferrovial said it was considering whether to make a bid for 100% of BAA which runs Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow and Edinburgh airports.
The company said that if it were to bid for BAA, it would do so as part of a consortium.
Ferrovial is one of the top three Spanish contractors.
Last year it made pretax profi s of £666M ($1.15bn) on a turnover of £4.8bn ($8.3bn).
