Fear for an old friend

I am a retired member with no ambitions to resume an engineering career. Roger Sainsbury's letter (NCE 21 September) prompted me to write.

If he thinks there has been misinformation about the bylaw changes for corporate membership and the proposals for single membership, we should all be concerned about people's perception of the Institution's integrity. More than that, there should be an external review to determine whether the process has been clouded by misinformation.

Out here in the sticks, my impression is that the changes are being driven through by a vocal few people committed to creating an Institution at the level of the lowest common denominator of membership. I worry for the same inexplicable reason as we worry if we see a friend we have known for 40 years going off the rails.
