Explosion rocks French nuclear re-processing plant

A nuclear reprocessing plant in Marcoule, southern France yesterday suffered a major explosion that killed one person and injured four others.

French Nuclear Safety Authority ASN said there is no radiation leak as a result of the fire, which occurred in the metal waste furnace room at the Centraco plant and was brought under control at 1pm local time.

The reprocessing plant is operated by Socodei, a subsidiary of French energy giant EdF. Low-level radioactive waste from nuclear maintenance and decommissioning is reprocessed on the site.

A security cordon is in place around the plant.
