Exploratory operation

I was pleased to read your piece, 'Bucks reviews A418 spend' (NCE 17 January), however you state that we joined forces with environmental groups to prove that the proposals are not good value for money. This is untrue.

We agreed to jointly commission a study with Friends of the Earth to investigate alternatives to road building. It was imperative we explore other measures as we need to reassure our residents that we are doing everything we can to alleviate the traffic problems in the A418 area.

Buckinghamshire County Council approached this with a completely open mind to see what could be achieved with alternative measures.

The implication that the project is unlikely to proceed is also misleading. We are now in a position to examine the findings alongside work already done before deciding how to proceed. Likewise, it is misleading to say that the report has made firm conclusions on the level of extra traffic which may be generated. We are awaiting further detailed investigations into the conclusions of the report.

Lastly, the public meeting, was arranged and hosted by Wing Parish Council. We were invited as well as other stakeholders, local residents and Friends of the Earth.
