Experience lost

A National Audit Office (NAO) report on Network Rail operations, published last week, concluded that the privatisation of rail maintenance and track renewals work had taken experienced engineers out of the industry.

The NAO said that this loss of experience affected project management, 'where containment of costs for ongoing investment in network renewal depends on such specific expertise'.

The NAO recommended that Network Rail should develop and promote flexible secondment schemes between itself and other businesses, to benefit both parties.
