Environment minister Michael Meacher

Environment minister Michael Meacher has launched a package of proposals to update the system of granting water abstraction licences. The proposals will bring virtually all forms of abstraction under control, allow water companies to be sued if their abstractions cause financial loss to others, and remove compensation to water companies if licences are varied or revoked.
