High profile and exciting projects are the main drivers for engineers moving jobs according to a recruitment survey of over 200 engineers published this week.
Exciting projects came top of the list for moving, above salary or working for a big name company according to the survey by recruitment agency Resourcing Solutions (RSL) carried out at Civils 2006.To survive the skills shortage, companies must get prestigious jobs on their books claimed managing director Richard Lawrance. Projects such as the Olympics; Heathrow East; Crossrail and major road works are likely to feature high on engineer's aspirational agenda, he said.Lawrence said the results were 'an eye opener' with 53% claiming that a high profile project was most important, 51% said the salary increase was a very important factor in a move, and just 13% said the employer was very important. 'Engineers are becoming better self promoters. They are becoming more experienced in the application process and less inclined to remain in a company through inertia,' said Lawrence.Some 59% of engineers thought it very important that the new job offered promotion prospects. Lawrance said he advised his clients to take people on who may not be qualified for the job but could be trained quickly. As well as securing a member of staff, training also breeds loyalty. He claimed that small companies working on sexy projects were finding it easier to recruit then the larger companies offering more mundane work.'The boot is on the other foot. Companies must now differentiate themselves to the candidate and its not just a case of attracting new skills but about keeping the old ones,' he said.
