The recommended shortage occupation lists for the UK and Scotland was published for use in Tier 2 of the new points-based system for immigration.
Tier 2 category is for skilled workers with a job offer to come in to fill gaps in the United Kingdom labour force that cannot be filled by the resident workforce. The job must be at S/NVQ level 3 or above, and the migrant must earn the appropriate salary or other package of remuneration appropriate for the job in the United Kingdom. Transport, ground and electricity generation engineers were included in the list as well as quantity surveyors and project managers for property development and construction.
ACE chief executive Nelson Ogunshakin said: "We are pleased with the progressive action taken by the Migration Advisory Committee to include civil and structural engineering on the UK shortage occupation list. Whilst this should go some way to filling the skills gap in these disciplines, we are extremely disappointed and dismayed that the government has decided against including mechanical and electrical engineering professions on the list - skills that were on the June 2008 list but have now been removed."
