Demand for engineers grew quicker than it did for any other profession last month, according to research.
A report by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and consultancy KPMG found that a soaring number of firms were looking for permanent engineering staff.
The profession was given an index reading of 68.3 in July, where anything above 50 represents growth in demand from the previous month.
Construction worker demand saw the second biggest level of growth, ahead of that for medical workers, executives, accountants, IT staff, secretaries, blue collar workers and caterers.
Engineers were also highly sought after for temporary placements, with a reading of 65.1 putting them third in the list.
Across all professions, the supply of suitable permanent staff fell by its sharpest rate in eight months, while the availability of temporary workers also fell.
KPMG partner Bernard Brown said: “The construction industry in particular is struggling to keep pace with demand, with businesses heavily recruiting both permanent and temporary workers.
“This is driving significant pay growth in the sector of almost 5%, outstripping Britain’s surging services industry which in comparison saw pay increases of just over 3%.
“The risk is that a shortage of skilled labour in this sector could impede Britain’s major building projects and put the brakes on the country’s real estate market.”
Data was collected via questionnaire from a panel of 400 UK recruitment and employment consultancies.
