Employers targeted in recruitment drive

ICE News

THE ENGINEERING Council is to start a major registration recruitment drive at Easter. The main targets are engineers' employers who will be asked to encourage their staff to sign up as full members of their relevant institutions, including the Engineering Council.

Council director general Malcolm Shirley believes there are 300,000 engineers of all disciplines to target, adding to its 250,000 membership.

The council's recruitment drive will complement the ICE's initiative to expand its own membership (NCE 6 January).

The first step is a a pilot campaign in which employers will be convinced of the benefits of having more professionally qualified staff. Role model firms such as Taylor Woodrow will be used to demonstrate the advantages.

The scheme will be rolled out across a region and then nationally.

Shirley said: 'I would be very disappointed if in five years time we did not have at least a 10% rise in membership.'
