Specialist manufacturer Ekspan has been called in to help managing agent Atkins solve the troubled Demag expansion joints on the M5 Avonmouth bridge (NCE 19 June) the Highways Agency confirmed this week. After lifting sections of the joint last week Ekspan and Atkins engineers found wear and fatigue on the four year old joint. Investigations this week centre on the full scope of the repair works needed.
