Edinburgh city chiefs back tram plan

Edinburgh's tram network received a major boost yesterday when councillors voted to approve the draft final business case.
Fifty six out of 58 councillors voted in favour of the recommendations laid out in a report by the City of Edinburgh Council. One councillor voted with his own alternative motion and one councillor was not present. The decision means that the draft final business case will now be submitted to the Scottish Executive for final approval in February. If granted, construction of the network will begin in April 2007. The first trams are scheduled to be up and running in December 2010.
