Easy option

Letters

Section 1(a) of all questions of all papers of the IStructE's chartered membership examination has always required the candidates to prepare a design appraisal indicating two distinct and viable solutions.

Notwithstanding the error in Question 1 this year, 210 candidates presented two schemes and only 40 answered with a single scheme. I cannot imagine that the latter did not realise that there was an error in the question especially since all the other questions on the paper required two schemes.

I therefore suspect that they just chose the easy option of appraising only one scheme.

In my opinion, the Institution has been very lenient in allowing them to sit the exam in September rather than asking them to come back next year.
