The Environment Agency has withdrawn its objections over a new Tyne Tunnel following an agreement with the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority. The deal requires that any potentially damaging environmental impacts tunnel construction are limited and controlled. The Agency says a water quality and sampling programme must be operating for three years before major dredging work takes place.
