E-commerce predicted to revolutionise industry

COMPONENT PRODUCERS and suppliers are set to be the new elite of the construction industry, Mace chairman and Movement for Innovation board member Bob White predicted this week.

He said customisation and standardisation of products purchased via e-commerce will turn the industry on its head in the next 20 years.

Change will be driven by the Rethinking Construction initiatives proposed in the Egan report of two years ago.

'The traditional role of main contractor will disappear and consultants will be smaller, adding front end benefits to projects rather than controlling the whole design.' He said his own company Mace would become a facilitator, bringing all the elements of the team together.
