'Doris' is one of three Lovat full face tunnel boring machines that will be used to drive a new cable tunnel for National Grid from Elstree, Hertfordshire to St John's Wood in London. Contractor J Murphy & Sons has started boring the 20km long London Connection tunnel that will transmit electricity from a substation in Elstree to meet increasing demand in the capital.

It is expected that the machines will excavate 50m of completed tunnel per day, with over 100 Murphy employees working on the project. The London Connection is due to be finished by spring 2003.
