Don't stop the rock

Halco Directional Drilling Products has launched the Storm 500, a pneumatic high-speed rock drill. It makes a 133mm pilot bore which can be opened to the desired diameter using an expander.

Speed of drilling is about 20m/ hour in strong rock with expected steering rates of above 1% per metre in consolidated ground. All servicing can be done onsite because the design incorporates few moving components.

The drill has been tested in Sweden (granite), the US (limestone), Australia (ironstone conglomerate) and the UK (sandstone).
