Doncaster sluice takes Yorks award

YORKSHIRE ASSOCIATION has named Doncaster's Crimpsall Sluice as the winner of its annual award for excellence in civil engineering.

President Joe Dwyer presented the award to the winning project team, comprising The Environment Agency as client, Babtie Group as designer and Edmund Nuttall as contractor, during a site visit earlier this week.

The £1.1M project was to decommission the sluice, which had reached the end of its useful life, and replace it with a parallel rock chute weir - the largest of its kind in England and Wales.

Chairman of the judges Paul Simpson said: 'The scheme impressed with its innovative, simple and elegant solution which provided optimum results for the variety of issues involved.'

A further 10 projects received commendations and were presented with their awards at the association's annual dinner.
