Please do not cancel the order for your water butt as suggested by Dr Weatherhead (NCE last week), but develop your rainwater harvesting scheme further.
Construct a small plinth to raise the butt a little above the cistern of your ground floor toilet and use the water for flushing purposes. (Your water supplier or NCE readers should be able to provide the design for the plumbing works. ) Such a scheme will provide flood attenuation in your immediate locality, while maintaining total flows further downstream. You will be able to use all the water collected in even the wettest season of the year, thus saving significant volumes of treated water (with all the environmental costs that involves) and hence make a marked reduction to your water and sewerage charges.
