Disaster trail


July 1995: the Sampoong department store collapse which killed over 120 shoppers and injured nearly 1,000.

May 1995: a gas explosion in an underground railway tunnel under construction in the city of Taegu claimed over 100 lives, including 50 children, after an excavator fractured a pipeline.

October 1994: collapse of the 16 year old Songsu Bridge in Seoul, which killed 32 and injured 17. Cause was identified as fatigue in the midspan suspended truss members exacerbated by traffic overloading.

August 1992: collapse of the 120m Haeng Ju cable stayed bridge in Seoul midway through erection after a temporary pier at midspan gave way. The collapse also toppled 740m of approach viaduct. Investigation revealed that only half the required volume of concrete had been placed in the pier's piled foundation.

July 1992: the main viaduct of the Changson Viaduct collapsed shortly after opening, killing one and injuring seven others. Failure of a pier was blamed.
