The Geotechnical & Geoenvironmental Software Directory (www. ggsd. com) may be just a 'spare time activity'for its founder Tim Spink, but it lists more than 1,200 specialist programs and last year attracted its millionth visitor.
Its latest update includes a new category for geothermal software as well as much expanded categories for reinforced slopes and walls, insitu testing and geophysics, including a number of programs for processing and analysing cone penetration testing and ground penetrating radar data.
Spink also reveals how several well known programs have been updated from DOS to Windows and earmarks a number of submissions as useful, interesting or different.
All running under Windows, these include a public domain finite element program to analyse the use of vertical drains and prevent liquefaction of sand by the dissipation of pore water pressure generated during an earthquake; a finite element program for 2D plane strain dynamic stress and deformation analyses of earth structures subjected to base excitation or dynamic loads; and a student research project designed to indicate how knowledge based systems may be applied to geotechnical problems.
Slope stability is one of the largest categories in the directory and by far the most popular, says Spink.Of those listed, he adds, the recently introduced CHASM is the only one that integrates slope hydrology with slope stability assessment. It is designed to help the user to estimate the effects on slope stability of selected storm events, vegetation, slope plan curvature and other slope and material properties.
