DETR commissions rail survey

THE DETR has awarded a rail research strategy co-ordinator a six month contract to supply high quality research information to help prioritise and identify rail strategy and funding needs.

The award, to a consortium led by AEA Technology Rail in conjunction with Leeds, Loughborough and Sheffield universities, will work under the Rail Research Strategy Group.

The RRSG is made up of Government bodies, including the shadow Strategic Rail Authority, Railtrack and representatives from the rail industry, and was established to raise the quality of railway research.

RRSG chairman Howard Wyborn said: 'There is a need for a co-ordinated approach so that the complex relationships between the many research topics and technologies can be better understood.'
