Death toll rises in Brazilian building collapse

The death toll has risen to 17 following the collapse of three building in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janerio, according to local media reports.

The three office buildings - of 20, 10, and four stories - collapsed late Wednesday near Rio’s municipal theatre on the city’s Cinelandia square, a historic district bustling by day but nearly deserted at night.

No official reason has been given for the cause of collapse but local media reports suggest there was renovation work going within the building at the time of the collapse.

An official police investigation and one by engineering-body Conselho Regioanl de Engenharia e Agronomia do Estado do Acree (Rio de Janeiro’s Regional Council of Engineering) are loooking into the cause of the accident.
