Darling outlines budget priorities

In a video message, Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling has pledged to help people and: “Invest in the future” in his much anticipated budget on Wednesday, while he is also expected to announce £15bn of ‘efficiencies’ in the public sector.

Darling said he wanted to do two things: “One is to help people now, through this difficult time. But equally importantly we have got to prepare for the future. To invest in Britain’s future to ensure that we can take advantage of the upturn - the recovery - when it comes.

“And it will come - I am confident about that because we have underlying strengths that we can play to and I want to build on those so there are jobs and good prospects for the future.”
