Gale force winds forced cancellation of last Monday's operation to position the £22M Gateshead millennium footbridge over the River Tyne.
Contractor Harbour & General needed a four hour weather window, with winds less than Force 4, for a vast floating crane to lift the 800t preassembled steel crossing at its Wallsend construction yard.
A further two hour window had to be guaranteed for the 8km upriver journey to the bridge site. If the operation is not complete before the weekend, it will be delayed at least another five days due to next week's excessively powerful tidal flows (see feature page 12).
