Crossrail suspends ground work following explosion

Crossrail has suspended all ground breaking work following an explosion on its High Holborn site yesterday.

A Crossrail spokesperson said: “Crossrail has suspended any activity which involves breaking ground such as piling or utility excavation until we are fully confident that it is safe to proceed. “

Barhale employee Barry McGeehan was admitted to the Royal London Hospital following an electrical explosion yesterday.

He is in a stable condition and was transferred to the St Andrews Centre for plastic surgery and burns.

Tunnelling machines Phyllis and Ada are undergoing planned maintenance and were not due to tunnel again this week on the western running tunnels.

Tunnelling machines Elizabeth and Victoria are continuing tunnelling as planned from Limmo Peninsula in East London.
