Crossrail completes first tunnel portal

Construction of the first Crossrail tunnel portal — Royal Oak Common near Paddington in West London — was completed this month.

Contractor Skanska-Costain began construction of the portal in January 2010, with consultant Capita Symonds providing the design, and completed earlier this month.

The site has now been handed over to the Bam Nuttall/Ferrovial Agroman (UK)/Kier Construction joint venture which will construct a tunnel between Royal Oak and Farringdon.

Construction of the tunnel will begin next April.
