Cranes hook up in Cairo

EAST OF Cairo, between Heliopolis and Nasr City, a major project is taking shape - the Golden Pyramids Plaza.

On an 11.5ha site, the complex includes hotels and restaurants, with 340,000m 2dedicated to commercial and residential use and 210,000m 2ofunderground parking. Central point of the complex is a glass pyramid known as the Starcenter.

Contractor is a joint venture of Oraskom Construction Industries, one of Egypt's largest construction companies, and the Greek Consolidated Contractors International Company.

Around 6,000 people are working on the site.

Liebherr has supplied 17 tower cranes for the project - 15 from the EC-H series and two LC models.

They are working at hook heights between 36m and 86m.

As large working radii are a necessity, most of the cranes are equipped with a 60m jib.

As the project is scheduled for a tight, 36 month programme, the cranes are working 12 hours a day.
