Councils win £275M to improve local roads

Twenty eight councils across England are to receive a share of £275M pot for major local roads maintenance, transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin announced today.

The announcement comes two days ahead of publication of the Asphalt Industry Alliance’s annual ALARM survey that highlights maintenance backlogs across the country.

Last year’s ALARM survey showed that the one-off cost of repairing all roads across England and Wales would be £12bn, up from £10.5bn in 2012.

The survey also found that 18% of English roads are now classed as being in poor condition with the figure rising to 19% in London.

The government’s new Challenge Fund will be used for one-off major infrastructure schemes by local authorities to improve life for local residents and businesses. The 31 schemes winning funding across the 28 local authorities include safety repairs, bridge renewal, carriageway and drainage improvements, as well as upgrading street lighting in a number of areas to bring them in line with modern standards.

The cash is part of the £6bn funding for local road maintenance announced in December 2014. The funding was awarded following a bidding process from local authorities and the winners put forward the strongest case.
